About Allen Sports

Richard Allen (pictured left in 1972) started Allen Sports in his garage in 1967. Since its founding, the company has been committed to producing the highest-quality, easiest-to-use bike racks and bicycle-related products on the market. Allen, a onetime aerospace engineer, opened Allen Sports after building a prototype bike carrier in his Lincoln, Massachusetts shop in his free time. The first-ever trunk-mounted bicycle carrier made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding) was refined on weekend excursions to Cape Cod. Shortly afterward, Allen took his design to market, and by 1971 had established a national presence for his product.

Today, the family-owned company owns more than three dozen patents, operates four warehouses nationally, six factories abroad, and sells products in countries around the world including USA, Mexico, Canada, and China.

    About Allen Bike Racks:
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Sturdy and works well with our five bikes! UPDATED May 25th!
    4 Stars
Sturdy and works well with our five bikes! UPDATED May 25th!
Having had this bike rack for a couple months now, it's time to share our thoughts. On the back of our Suburban it works GREAT, easily holding our three adult bikes and two kids bikes. The gray ridged inserts that you place the frame of the bikes on act as a cushion along with holding the bikes in place. There is a black rubber strap with holes in on each segment enabling you to tightly secure the frame on the support. (There are round "knobs" on each side to attach the straps.) The webbed strap that comes with the bike rack is pretty weedy so we purchased two ratchet straps to further secure the bikes in place. One strap is attached to the ring at the bottom of the rack and then placed around the bike frames. The second strap we place through and around the back wheels to prevent them from spinning around. We have not had an issue with it bouncing - the whole thing is sturdy.Richard says the bike rack is a bit of a pain to put on as it does need to be bolted on. HOWEVER it is still a one person job and once on we have not had any issues of it coming off. Just like any bike rack, expect scratches on your bikes!UPDATE May 25th, 2015The instructions are very clear on the box that this bike rack is NOT suitable to attaching to the back of a travel trailer etc. Wanting to take our bikes with us when we went camping and obviously not being able to put the rack on the back of the Suburban when we are towing the travel trailer, we decided to purchase the Swagman RV 2" Bumper Adaptor ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00174ZHGU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and use that to attach the bike rack to the back of the trailer. Initially very nervous about the whole thing falling apart I am here to report that the bike rack did NOT fail us but the trailer bumper did! The original bumper was not very thick and so began to pull away from the weld! What to do? Taking a trip to our local RV store, they advised us to go to a local welder. He took the original, now completely busted bumper off and replaced it with a heavy duty one. What a difference! As you can see from the photos, there is an amazing difference in quality. (Old one is on top!) The bumper no longer bounces or moves under the weight. Yes, it means we are having to pull a heavier trailer but that is totally worth it to have our bikes with us. How much did it cost to have the bumper replaced? Only $145 plus three cans of spray paint. Worth it? ABSOLUTELY!Please note that it is still imperative to ensure that the bikes are secured well and that the pedals are at an angle so that if you go over a bump they are not going to dent the back of your trailer/fifth wheel etc.The other disadvantage is that with a thicker pipe you may not be able to fit your sewer pipe in it.Hope this helps, Richard and Liz

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Value/ Great 5-bike rack
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2020
I did some significant research and selected this to transport five bikes; two adult and three kids bikes. I recommend this pretty confidently as a great value for the money.

    Positives:
SIMPLE: This was easy to assemble and attach (you do need a socket wrench), and easy to load with five bikes. It took me only 25 minutes to un-box, assemble, attach and mount all five bikes the first time!
OPTIONS: The mounting brackets rotate on the bars so that you can mount the bikes and attach at any angle (see pictures and video). Also, you have the option to lower the bar (see picture with it tilted and our van gate open) by removing the retaining pin. This is a great feature but only practical when the bikes are not attached to the rack. DO NOT ATTEMPT when fully loaded!
QUALITY: This is made of decent quality materials (Steel, aluminum, thick plastic, and strong straps). The paint isn’t powder coated, which was the only disappointment and will lead to scrapes and eventually corrosion if you use this all the time.

    Negatives:
    - Even after tightening all bolts with socket wrenches, the rack rattles and sways. I watched the bikes in the rear view and saw them obviously moving the entire trip. I don’t think it’s a serious issue, but I wish the tubes fit tighter together. I wrapped painters tape around the inside pipes To fill the voids and so far it’s heavily reduced the movement.

I recommend this as a good value for families that want to transport bikes casually for vacations or weekend trips.

Good value for money. Got the x 5 carrier.
A few modifications made as I do long trips and rough roads regularly
    - Prevented any wobble with packing and also ordered a 2” tow hitch anti rattle bracket which will strengthen it further. I have a very heavy e-bike to carry.
    - Added an extender to get it past my rear tire. This will be permenantly attached to the device and avoids any potential faff of fitting and unfitting the hitch.
Just did a 1000km trip with two bikes and no wobble visible at all.
All in all v happy and already have ideas for adapting another one into a second spare wheel carrier.

Update. I clipped a hidden wall v lightly but it was enough to dislodge the mechanism. I was able to continue but when took it off today decided that it was not viable to continue using it as designed. Instead I have removed the entire locking mechanism and fitted bolts. This will be more secure going forward. I’m still happy with the product but I suspect most customers would not be happy having to do this type of adaptation, I really don’t mind tbh. Star rating remains for now.
