Braun razors have been in use in my family for the last 3 generations. They last a long time and are proof to good Braun quality. At $20 this was an absolut bargain even for an entry level razor. The inconvenience of a corded device is offset by the price and the fact that a teen neither travels much nor needs to shave every day.
I hate battery shavers and desperately wish Remington would manufacture the MS2-100 because that was a totally awesome shaving machine. I tried a Remington plug in only rotary shaver and it was weak but deadly. It tore up skin without cutting hair. What a waste. I regret that because of the STUPIDITY of manufacturers I was forced to purchase a Remington F5800 chord/chordless. It shaves reasonably well but not as well as the old MS2-100. They advertise that it will run plugged in with a dead battery. I have verified that is true, so definitely try the Remington F5800 rather than the Braun Series 1. Shaving manufacturers need to make actual working chord only shavers. Seriously stop being STUPID. Make me a shaver I can be proud to shave with and happy. Every battery is toxic. Stop putting batteries in a device that I will always use at home.
I am a man over 60. I HATE batteries in any appliance that does not need to be mobile. I hate managing the charging schedule. I hate the needless presence of toxic polluting batteries when they are not needed for mobility. I wake up. I walk in the bathroom. I shave. What I really hate is when I start to shave then the batteries die. Being half shaven is worse than being unshaven. Shavers should plug into a wall outlet and run. Companies that make and market shavers are missing a huge market by not selling high quality shavers that operate directly on AC plug in power.
I thank Braun for selling one of the very last AC chorded only shavers. But - this is not a great shaver. This shaver is pretty weak and underpowered. With only a single cutter, it takes much longer to get a good shave than my old Remington MS2 90 and MS2 100. After ordering this Braun, and reading the reviews, I actually took the best parts from each of my old Remington MS2 shavers to make one that works. I will hold it in reserve for those days when the beard is a bit heavy from not shaving over some long weekend or fishing trip.
The Braun Series 1 130s is a fine simple device. The chord is a bit short. The main problem is the weak cutter motion. It kind of vibrates beneath the screen rather than sliding back and forth like the old Remington's did. Also with only one cutter, it takes more passes than with the two cutter screens on the Remington MS2 models. This means that it takes me longer to shave than before.
Some of the worst reviews that noted this weak cutting action mentioned trying to press harder against the face. That is the wrong thing to do with any screen shaver. You need the individual whisker ends to poke thru the holes in the screen. So if the whiskers are longer, you need to float over the area and let the shaver nibble the hairs down. This with suitable patience will yield a very satisfactory shave.
I am giving this three stars in congratulations for making a plug in shaver. That said - I sorely miss the higher quality and utility of better quality plug in shavers. Please Somebody needs to make a high quality chorded only shaver. This is far better than a battery shaver. So much better that I ordered a second Braun Series 1 130s to keep for when this one eventually dies.
If Remington is listening... Please manufacture more MS2 90 or MS2 100 shavers. They are simple, chorded only, and provide a reasonably quick and quality shave. Somebody needs to realize that not everyone wants batteries in shavers.
However with this Smart Control shaver they've changed the head design so the holes are enlongated and facing different directions. The result is a razor that catches more hairs (even nose and ear hairs if we wanna get graphic... you younger ones will understand when you get older). However, even this design still leaves the longer hairs untouched. It seems to be a flaw of the Braun line.
Saving grace: this has a trimmer that can be quickly popped out to get the long ones, which then easily shave.
Remember with any razor it's necessary to lubricate it on a regular basis. Braun includes oil with this, but I greatly prefer spray lubricant that is available in just about any razor department. I make sure to clean and spray my razor at least once a week; it keeps it running nice and shiny.
This is the corded version rather than the rechargeable. I prefer corded because of constant full-power reliability. If you prefer rechargeable they're only a few bucks more. As one user stated the cord does seem to pop out of this rather easily; one solution to that is a dab of silicon glue. Worked great.
This is definitely my favorite razor ever used. Dandy little gem for surprisingly low cost. When it comes to razors you can spend as much money and get as fancy as you want. But I believe this does as good a job of shaving as anything I've used.
The more expensive units may have stronger and faster motors, so remember that quality is remembered long after low price is forgotten and invest in your comfort zone. I bought this just to try out the new design... and because it's corded.
I bought the Smart Control shaver, even though it is made in China, because I will no longer buy rechargeable shavers.
A minor problem with the Smart Control shaver is the cord popping out of the shaver, typically 1 or 2 times per shave. The old Braun had this problem occasionally, but not nearly as often as with the Smart Control shaver.
A bigger problem with the Smart Control shaver is that it takes me at least 5 passes to get a good shave (but that shave is better than the shave with the old Braun). If not for this problem, I would give the shaver 5 stars. I'm willing to put up with this problem to avoid the cost of replacing rechargeable shavers.
A good feature of the the Smart Control shaver is that the shaved hair stays in the shaver (the old Braun leaked shaved hair even when it was new).
