Product Description
Whatever your task at hand -- whether it's launching that boat before daybreak, setting up your camper before the rush or getting a final load to the dump before close -- CURT class 3 trailer hitches offer the strength needed for serious towing. They make it easy to hitch up and Bring It, offering a vehicle-specific fit and the weight capacity to handle a variety of trailers. Custom class 3 hitches are the most common type of receiver hitch for pickup trucks and SUVs. Because of their weight range, they are also found on full-size cars, crossovers and minivans. Each custom-fit class 3 hitch package is made for vehicle-specific mounting. This particular kit fits certain years of the Subaru Crosstrek (see application info to verify vehicle compatibility). It provides a weight carrying capacity of 3,500 lbs. GTW and 525 lbs. TW. CURT class 3 trailer hitches are typically used to attach and haul utility trailers, boat trailers, campers, snowmobile or ATV haulers and more (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest-rated towing component). Each class 3 hitch has a 2" receiver tube and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety. To ensure that CURT class 3 receiver hitches have what it takes for serious trailering, they are designed using a hands-on approach and are constructed with rugged, high-strength steel and precise welding. We also protect our class 3 hitches in a co-cured finish of liquid A-coat and black powder coat for superior resistance to rust, chipping and UV damage.

As for the install - I did mine without lowering the exhaust or jacking the car up. It’s definitely doable but it is a pain since you’re pretty cramped for space and working the hitch around the exhaust is tricky at first. That being said, if you decide to do it that way make sure you have something to prop the hitch up and support it under the car while you maneuver it into the necessary place. I used a toolbox and that was fine.
Otherwise I followed along with the etrailer produced instructional video and it went smoothly. I used a file and ground out what I needed to for the frame - definitely takes some work, but it’s doable if you don’t have a step bit on hand.
I will say be careful with ordering any of the used ones off Amazon - the first one I ordered was missing the carriage bolts and two of the rectangular spacer plates. They were able to replace it, but was definitely annoying to have to wait longer. Also, the packages they arrived in were on their last leg - throw a 40lb hitch inside a large cardboard box with minimal padding and you’ll feel bad for the mailman trying to wrangle what’s left of it up the drive.
All that being said, take your time on the install, take the steps you’re comfortable taking in lowering the exhaust or jacking the car up, and enjoy the new hitch!
Curt makes great products. This is the third Curt hitch I've added to my family's Subarus. If you're handy and comfortable with wrenching, you CAN install it yourself. That said, you will probably spend some time cursing at it. There are four bolts that hold it in, and between the frame and the exhaust system, they are tight to get at. Also, you have to grind away about an eighth inch of sheet metal to get the brackets in. (This is completely normal for a Curt hitch; I've never installed one where I didn't have to grind away metal. The instructions make this clear. I used a Dremel tool with a grinding bit.) Also, you will need a pair of jack stands or a strong helper. The bracket has to be held tight against the frame to get the nuts on the bolts and it is HEAVY and AWKWARD. Also, fishing the bolts through the holes in the frame is aggravating, just take your time and use a good flashlight. Curt supplies special wires to fish the bolts in and they work just fine. But again, it's aggravating because it's tight quarters.
If you have access to a vehicle lift, it'll make the installation a lot easier. Even ramps will help. Worst case, jack it up and use a pair of jack stands. Unless you're skinny (I am not) you will have a tough time installing this with the car on the ground. Did I mention that there's a not a lot of extra room?
As for the hitch itself, it seems sturdy. I attached both my boat trailer and a bike carrier. Both fit and didn't wobble. Note that when hauling a trailer, the distance sensors in the back bumper will not work. (Duh!) If you rely on the backup camera, it's partially blocked by a loaded bike rack.
If you're doing serious trailering, you will probably want to peen over or tack weld the ends of the mounting bolts. The instructions say to inspect them occasionally but I doubt that happens much. I've never pulled a full size trailer with this and probably wouldn't want to. But for dragging the rowboat or some bikes to the beach, it's all good.
Highly recommended. I've also ordered the corresponding no-solder trailer light kit from here. I'll review that as well after I install it.

Highly recommended. I've also ordered the corresponding no-solder trailer light kit from here. I'll review that as well after I install it.
First: Per the instructions, the kit is supposed to have QTY: 4, Grade 8, 1/2" carriage bolts, but only had QTY: 3, Grade, 8, 1/2" carriage bolts, with a fourth mystery 1/2" shoulder bolt (see photo) not identified in the instructions. This resulted in a futile 2 hour search for a replacement fourth, Gr. 8 carriage bolt at the local hardware stores. I ended up having to use a Grade 8, 1/2" Hex, Washer Head Bolt which resulted in additional grinding to the frame hole to make it fit.
Second: Use of the fishwire to feed the bolts and square spacer plates through the frame rail was surprisingly easier than expected. However, there are two round hole spacers provided for leveling the front of the hitch. Installation of these two spacers, if required, is a little tricky, due to the bolts, fishwire and hitch interferences. It might be easier to cut two slots in the round hole spacers so that they slide in between the hitch and frame rails and then torque the bolts & nuts to secure the plates in place.
The only additional thing to add is that I used locking compound to secure the nuts to the fasteners prior to torquing. It would be better if the bolts were supplied with some locking compound/tabs on the threads.
