I installed everything myself and was not too bad overall. I didn't want to cut into the frame mainly because I didn't have a dremel. Even though all the tutorials out there tell you to drill into the frame, the Subaru dealer told me they remove the bumper for installation so I went that route. It took about an hour to remove the bumper, but know that I know how to, it would probably take me less than 20 minutes. Installation was easy, and I was able to lift one side with my thigh while installing the nuts on the other side. I would recommend this tow hitch to others. The dealer charges $450 for the tow hitch and $450 for installation so $120 + DIY installation is a big win :)
If anyone removes the bumpers, just be careful not to break any of the clips around the top of the bumper. They are very easy to pull off gently except for the clips right above the top center. I had to get under the car, pull up on the bottom of the bumper, and reach towards the inside of the bumper and gently push outwards. You can see where the clips are attached if you go under the car. There were two push pins that I broke around the wheel assembly, but those are easily replaceable.

When under the vehicle there are three holes on each side of the frame. This entire hitch can be installed with only small alterations to the hole closest to the rear of the car (on both passenger and driver sides). You will need to make that hole larger to fit the bolts into the frame. I did this by hand in about 5 minutes using a simple Round Metal Bastard File like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Stanley-22-178-10-Inch-Single-Bastard/dp/B004EBJF34/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1527793659&sr=8-6&keywords=round+metal+file&dpID=316x7iaeDnL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
You will need to grind that most aft hole to look like my hand drawn photo. Once you do that everything can be fed through the enlarged hole and installed. Follow the instructions and you will be fine. I recommend getting all of the bolts & spacers into place and then installing the hitch. Unless you have the strength to hold that hitch against the frame with one hand and attach the nut with the other, you will need help.
The instructions say 30 minutes for amateur installation but its probably closer to 45 minutes. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE: after installing the hitch correct the first time, I felt the metal spacers may not be needed. I was wrong. They serve a purpose. I'm telling you this because during the process of putting them back in I accidentally pushed a bolt into the frame. I struggled for 30 minutes to get it out of there. Under no circumstance do you want to do that.

The minor drawbacks to this are, for some cars, or at least my Crosstrek, you'll have to cut metal in the frame for the mounting assembly to fit. (I cut mine with a drill. That's NOT the recommended method.) Also, there's a giant sticker with the company's logo on it. I took mine off with a little WD-40 and a plastic scraper. And, finally, the instructions call for the bolts to be torqued to a certain setting. So, if you're like me, you don't have a torque wrench, but even if you do, getting the socket to the bolt to torque is tricky as the bolts are hidden deep within the car's under carriage.
Nevertheless, I have a working trailer hitch now and it was a lot less expensive than going to U-Haul.

Have not had any issues with lower clearance with hitch below bumper as it is still higher than gear case. In fact we have a challenging clearance situation on access to our cabin and I would say the hitch has saved the flimsy plastic bumper from being damaged.
