---|---|---|---|
Use a rigid backer padAlthough flexible backers work well for concave profile edges such as ogees, the truth is the need to use them on almost any other profile is rare, plus the job can be done with a rigid backer as well with patience. |
Use the whole padUse the pad’s edges as you alternate from the top ½ to the bottom ½ while you slide across the stone edge. You should feel the pad’s contact that will allow you to release some of the pressure. |
Use of polisher RPMToo high RPM will create excessive heat that will result in white resin pads smearing on the stone. In other cases, it will even burn the stone itself. As a rule, for 50-100-200-400 grit pads use 2000-2500 RPM and with 800-1500 grit pads use 3000-3500 RPM. Never use above 5000 RPM. |
Use of waterIf you don’t feel the lower grit pad biting the material, chances are you are using too much water and probably too high RPM. Starting with grit 400 and higher, it is recommended to use more water. Using a suitable amount of water can make the pads work faster. |
Polishing Project
Lower Grits - remove scratches
Use the polisher initially at low speed (1500-2500 RPM) and then increase its speed slowly for faster polishing suitable for specific stone. Skip no grit and start polishing the material edge with side-to-side motion from the top half of the pad to the lower half of the pad. Do not move to the higher grits until you find a smooth surface that is free from all saw marks or old sealant.
Higher Grits - achieve shiny finish
With higher grits (400, 800, 1500), add more water and increase the RPM to 3000-3500 to avoid burning your stone’s surface. You will find good shine starting with grit 800, and the grit 1500 will bring a mirror like finish.
Follow the rules and your project will shine
Skip no grit starting from the lower one to the higher one, use the right amount of water, set the correct RPM for the lower grits and the higher grits, be patient as polishing is not a task to be done in a hurry. In the end you'll be rewarded.
Engineered Stone Polishing with Confidence: 8 Tips
- Grind wet. Wet grinding eliminates the damage to stone-polishing pads.
- Judge dry. If the surface is wet, scratches can pass unnoticed.
- Use the whole wheel. Stop using only the middle of the pad.
- Skip no grit. It’s always faster to do it right the first time than to try to take shortcuts and risk damaging the stone you’re working on.
- Polish slow. Keep the speed of the pad low for the lower grits #50 #100 #200 (~2000-2500 RPM) and go to higher speeds for higher grits #800 #1500 (~3000-3500). Never use the pads at higher speeds than 5000 RPM.
- Keep it clean. A good way to ensure every single part of edge is polished is to wipe the edge surface with gently squeezed wet cleaning towel and then polish dry.
- Believe what you see. If your eyes tell you that something is not quite right about the surface, stop! Figure out what the problem is before continuing.
- Be patient. Polish a little and look a lot. This is the mantra for successful results in the polishing process.

The photo shows a test on a piece of black galaxy granite beginning with factory polished granite. Look outside the whiteout marked areas for what it looked like before anything was done to it. The left area is another test and unrelated to this product. The center area in the photo is what it looks like after using 400, 800 then the highest grit in this kit: 1500 . The 400 was used for about 15-20 seconds with water @ 1500 rpm increasing to 2000 for another 15-20 seconds. The 800 for about 5 MINUTES with water at 2500rpm increasing to 3000 for another 5 without noticeable difference in appearance. The 1500 pad was used at 3000, then 3500rpm for a long-long time with water and also allowing the water to evaporate for short periods before re-wetting in attempting to get anywhere close to the original appearance of the factory granite. It was unachievable after 20 minutes in just this tiny test area. The area to the right shows the result of one piece of 3000 grit silicone carbide wet and dry sandpaper with water after 3-5 minutes with water @ 3000rpm.
I'm returning the kit.

I was my first attempt and it had to be pored in place so the surface was far from perfect. The results really surprised me. I never thought it would come out so smooth. I spent about four hours with an electric buffer at about 3000 to 3800 rpms going through each grit of disc according to directions and online videos. Then I sealed the concrete with one coat of sealer. I am very pleased with the results. The product works exactly as described but it takes time and patience. I did about 25 square feet in about 4 hours taking frequent breaks and making sure to use plenty of water with the discs. The only ChangE the company could make would be to include one more 400 grit disc. As you can see in the third picture the 200 and 400 discs wore out the most. This may have been my lack of experience. But I still would have like an extra 400. Overall, I highly recommend this product. My wife is very happy with our new outdoor kitchen counter and bar top.
