14 customers mention6 positive8 negative

Customers are mixed about the air flow of the space heater. Some mention that the fan pushing a nice air flow doesn't have to run constantly, while others say that it's too weak and not sufficient to move enough air to keep things even.

"...The fan runs constantly. Will have to contact DR Heater by phone to get some professional help...." Read more

"...The extra airflow is key I think. The other brands don't move the air well enough IMO. Too weak of fans." Read more

"...was just hard to do it, because the inspection window and access panel were both so small...." Read more

46 customers mention4 positive42 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the insulation of the space heater. They mention that the built-in thermostat seems to run hot, the differential heat control is poor, and the ambient temperature inside the unit rises. The spacing behind it allows heat to build up around the unit fast. The internal overheat sensor is great for noise, but it allows the heat to built up around it fast. It shuts off and the temperature cannot be re-set until the unit is running again.

"...is simply flawed because it's internal and the unit generally sits high in the space it's heating...." Read more

"...that if there isn't sufficient spacing behind it the ambient temp inside the unit rises and the unit shuts off too soon...." Read more

"...The garage takes about 30 minutes to get warm, but I can start working in the garage in only 10 minutes...." Read more

"...The thermostat would not control the heater. So now I call them and tell them every time the electrician comes out it costs me $100...." Read more

Good quality but will not work if it is within several feet of a wall or ceiling.
3 Stars
Good quality but will not work if it is within several feet of a wall or ceiling.
Edit: see the end for updatesI REALLY wanted to like this heater but giving it 1 star for the lack of listing detail and the fact that even with 12" of clearance around the unit, it's not enough, due to the built in thermostat. Basically, don't buy this unless you use the external thermostat. In my application, I didn't fid these issues until AFTER I got it installed (hard to properly bench test it) and frankly it doesn't meet expectations as advertised.Overall impressions are good build quality (although LED panel and remote look cheap), good heat,, fan is not real loud, and decent instructions, even if it will not work near walls. The first issue I noticed when unpacking is that it has 4" or so leads coming out of it that you have to wire nut to a service cord and then stuff into the unit (or risk chafing on the unprotected wire opening). Ok, I expected something like that. Problem is that the leads are too short to do this easily. And if you use the 8 ga cord they recommend (you should, 10 ga is only good for 30A and this unit will draw 31 or 32, maybe more, depending on your actual service voltage), fishing the wire nuts back into the hole may be difficult. It was for me at least. Got that done though.Next issue was mounting. So the bracket is designed for a horizontal or vertical surface. Mine is angled due to a vaulted ceiling (see pics). I managed to get the bracket to work, even cantilevered at an angle it seems ok. Note that the unit weighs right at 20lbs. As many others have noted, the unit can't clear the 12" distance requirement with its own bracket unless you are hanging from a 2x12 header or similar a few feet away from any walls. If you don't, which I think is most applications, the unit shuts off early or even overheats. The critical flaw in this unit is twofold: the sensor is mounted to the inlet (normal, from an engineering standpoint to measure inlet temp), and the fan speed is very low. The low speed is great for noise but it allows heat to build up around the unit fast enough that the sensor detects the heat and shuts off early. In my 600 sq ft shop at 60F, it would run about 5 minutes on high and shut off thinking it was already 80F. It raised the temperature 10 ft in front of the fan to about 65F. The outlet air temp at that ambient was 200F, so that should give you an idea of why having the sensor right on the inlet is the problem (unit makes a lot of heat but doesn'tmove it very efficiently). Note that the fan has ONE speed. It has a high and low mode, but this only switches in or out some of the heater elements... the fan speed stays the same.Since I can't wire an external thermostat easily (I HIGHLY recommend you do this or get a different unit) and I had already installed the thing, and didn't want to make another mounting bracket, I opted to relocate the temp sensor. I extended the sensor wires about 10 ft and mounted the sensor a few feet further out from the unit, and low and behold, it works fine. The sensor is just too close.Note that I was only comfortable doing this since the unit DOES have a thermal limit switch mounted in the fan shroud near the heater elements. This should interrupt the operation if the heater ever overheats. I noted the fan was marked as having thermal protection as well.So- I really wanted to like this unit but I think without the external thermostat (which looked hard as heck to access the internal wiring to connect), expect to have to mount this thing a few feet from anything else, at least, and then the temp sensor may still be way off. That's fine but for me it was shutting off thinking it was 80F and it was only 65F which is a problem.Edit: Raised review to 3 stars from 1. After a winter of using this unit, with all the above still being an issue, I can live with it. It still seems a bit dodgey from an accuracy standpoint but extending the sensor and doing what I have done it does keep the room warm. I just can't expect the thermostat to hold it to better than a 10 degree swing or so. It also is frustrating that it only goes down to 50F, I would like a setting for 40 or 45 to just keep my shop pipes form freezing. Instead I manually cycle it off when I know of won't get near freezing and I am not around. I imagine this works MUCH better with the recommended clearance around the unit, but that would be very hard except in a barn or w/an open attic space where you can get a few feet all around it. But it does make good heat off 220V in a small package, and it seems to be well made for the money.
