Product Description
The incredibly efficient Eccotemp FVI-12 Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater uses an intense gas-fired flame to instantly heat water the moment it passes through the unit, so as long as you feed water in, hot water will come out! Comes ready to install. With the included horizontal vent kit, this Eccotemp FVI-12 Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater can be installed for indoor use right out of the box. Great for cabins and smaller homes, so you don't bust your budget for a hot shower! The Eccotemp FVI-12 Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater is a manual water heater. This means that any water temperature adjustments must be made at the face of the unit using the knobs for water flow and gas pressure. Mixing cold water at your output source is not recommended. The 'water temperature' adjustment knob could use a better description. From tinkering with it, I concluded the 'water temperature' knob is really a flow rate adjuster. A higher 'water temperature' setting, makes the water heater turn on at lower flow rates (lower demand) but also limits the flow capacity. It seems to behave like a restricter, that increases the flow velocity which then triggers the heater to turn on, but like a restrictor, it also limits the maximum water flow rate.
Turn the 'water temp' to a much lower setting and the heater flows a lot more hot water but also needs more water 'demand' (two small faucets together will do it) to trigger the heater to turn on.
The gas knob simply adjusts the size of the flame. So with lower water flows (higher 'water temperature' knob setting) you will want a smaller flame to keep the heater from shutting off due to overheating from the lower water flow.
So to clarify:
A Higher 'water temperature' knob setting = more 'turn on' sensitivity but a lower maximum water flow rate.
A Lower 'water temperature' knob setting = less 'turn on' sensitivity but a higher maximum water flow rate.
Once you set the right 'sensitivity to flow' for your needs, then simply set the gas knob to a good water temp. I would err on the cooler side (lower gas knob setting) to keep the heater from over heating and shutting off. But if you have higher water flow setting (lower 'water temperature' knob position) the gas can be set a little higher. In order to warm the increased water flow.
I hope this helps someone who was not considering this heater. It really works great, it simply needs a little patience to be set to your speciific water heat and flow needs.
Installation was easy with everything provided for venting. (SS Piping could have longer) gas and water hookups standard. I'm using PEX water line with no issues.
Operation of the heater has been trouble free as far as the heater goes. Operation and trouble for the operator is a whole other story. I fussed with the gas and water controls until is was blue faced with anger and frustration. I couldn't get a consistent comfortable temp, use the cold waster and the heater cuts off, turning knobs every witch way getting more and more confused wondering what i had bought. Sometimes you just have to walk away and not think to much or to hard. I didn't go near the heater for a few days. it was hard to resist not trying to adjust the temp to one liking. Walking away did the trick . Spending a life time with a tank water you mix your hot and cold water at the faucet to get your desired water temp. being this a base model for small applications this mixing is done at the heater and is now a set temp of your liking. One just uses the hot water knob to turn the heater on or off. The water temp that flows out will be what temp you configured at the tank. no reason to add cold to hot or hot to cold to get the right temp as you would do with a tank heater. My frustration was over with, I also canceled my appointment with a shrink as I thought I was loosing my mind. This a a no frills unit You have one temp from any of your faucets or shower heads with. You cant start out with a warm shower and slowly increase the amount of heat, You only get the temp that you set at the heater. for my situation being a garage/shop this works great. If my situation was having this model in my home it would not work to small and basic with just the one temp. Sometimes a HOT shower is in order
Now that all is focus this is a trouble free, efficient, instant on demand heater I very happy with..
EcoTemp's owners manual is lacking in setup and operation instruction not offering a clear understanding of the heater single temp operation. they are also vague in other parts. This is common with products that come from Asia because translation is such a problem Detailed explanation and / or Q & A is not even attempted. If one temp for all doesn't work for you I'm sure their higher end models have at the faucet mixing or hot and cold. This heater is a great bargain if your needs fit this heater. it's well made and does what its supposed to do each time the hot water faucet is turned on delivering Eco friendly hot H2O.
Update 5/25/2016
I'm back to nothing but anger and frustration with this heater!! I since installed a bathroom. Back to not being able to maintain a consistent water temp. In the beginning the heater was configured to my utility sink and it's natural flow rate. Adding a small sink for thje bathroom it's flow rate is much less than the utility. when attempting to use the bath sink anything can and does happen at each use. wild temp spikes or heater shut off. to get the heater to work in the new bathroom sink i first have to turn on the the utility sink hot water then go to the bathroom sink and slowly feed off of the hot running to the utility sink. why didn;t i just wash up at the utility in the first place. Says it all about this crap water heater. what a waist of hard earned money. Now I have to spend more I don;t have.

Can I simply have the unit exchanged for the lp model?
We were actually in the middle of doing a complete bathroom gut-reno job when our contractor found a plumbing leak under our existing 40 gal hot water tank. So he had to tear out the rotten sub-flooring and replace it ... and while he had everything gutted I thought this was the perfect time to replace this big bulky tank (which was a rental from Reliance Home Comfort) with a Space-Saving wall-mounted Tankless Water Heater. So I called Reliance Home Comfort (on Wednesday July 2nd) to have them switch units for us. Their consultant came out on Thursday morning to pre-inspect our home, and told us, 'yes, everything here is OK, and meets all local regulations and bylaws’, and she booked the appointment for their gas-fitter to come the next day (Friday July 4, 2014) to remove their 40 gal. tank and install a new wall-mounted unit. On Friday, our contractor waited all day ... but the Reliance technician never showed, never even called ... So at 3:55 PM, I called them to see what was up, to find out that he was not coming.!!!
All they did was make excuses ... and then the customer support rep tells me they can't do it anyway???
Unfortunately for us, it turned out that Reliance does not carry any Mobile-Home approved Tankless Water heaters. NOT ONE.
So our contractor sat here all day for nothing and he was mad as all get out!
Saturday morning I went online looking for one, but all the mobile home approved models were very pricey, and quite large in size, but thank GOD I found this Eccotemp at Amazon.ca.
The main reason for switching away from my 40 gallon (Imp = 181 liters) tank, which was working flawlessly by the way, was to gain some much needed space in our small mobile home.
Amazon really delivered ... the tank arrived on Wednesday morning and I had a local mechanical contractor install and hookup the unit on Friday morning (July 11th, 2014). Everything was included, the mounting brackets, stainless steel venting, and he had it all installed and running within 3 1/2 hours.
I love that I gained 11 square feet of floor space in my tiny home-office!
We’ve been using this unit for 7 days now and are very satisfied so far with the performance of the Eccotemp FVI-12-NG as it does have a high capacity for its very small size, and, that it came at a very good price too, sure was a bonus!
Thanks Amazon for the fastest turn around delivery time, and the reduced shipping cost too!
