Customers find the auto key shell easy to swap. They mention that the process is fairly simple, and it's easy to replace the plastic shell on the transponder keys rather than having new ones. They also say that it'd be easy to transfer the internal parts into the case, and the switch blade can be swapped over from the OEM to the new case, if they are intact.

"...and easy to put together and the screw in the back makes it easy to change it if anything ever happens again. Also can we talk about the price?!..." Read more

Customers are mixed about the quality of the auto key shell. Some mention that it looks and feels like factory new, while others say that the material seems to be durable and rugged. The shell seems to good, but some customers say that they can't get the pin to lock like the OEM key. Some customers also mention that the popping key is useless and the spring doesn't really work, resulting in a non-functioning collapsible key feature.

"...I do think cutting helped a little. On the 2nd one, the shell came apart without the knife when I was breaking off the metal key ring loop...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the performance of the auto key shell. Some mention that it works great, looks great, feels great, and is made of high quality plastic, while others say that the thing that locks the key down doesn't seem to work, the old key blade would not work, and the remote does not work. "...shell is nearly but not exactly identical to the OEM part and works pretty well...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the fit of the auto key shell. Some mention that it's a perfect fit for their 2013 Chevy Sonic, while others say that it doesn't fit. They say that the tolerances do not match, the key and guts inside did not fit, and the button fitting is not the same size as the original key. The oem key blade and hinge will not fit this unit, and a different size for the latch mechanism is required. Customers have to get it cut at the dealership, and some say that they found it just not compatible with their original 2013 Cruz.

"...key will not stay locked in place open or close because of the slight size mismatch...." Read more

"...new shell was quite simple, with the original fob's printed circuit board fitting perfectly...." Read more

"...But I had to give it 3 stars because my key blade didn't fit.We have a Chevy Equinox and a Chevy Cruze and both needed new fobs...." Read more

Customers have mixed opinions about the ease of assembly of the auto key shell. Some mention that it looks easy enough that they can do it by themselves, while others say that it's not as easy to assemble as they say, taking the GM fob apart was difficult, and piecing it back together takes time. They mention that the instructions do not come with the product, and it may require some DIY modifications to make it all work.

"...Assembly was easy. I was able to use the old 'key' without having to cut the blank key provided, no modifications needed...." Read more

Huge value, but there are potentially some adjustments to make it work.

Huge value, but there are potentially some adjustments to make it work.
First, the value can't be beaten. $250 for the dealer to replace one fob? No thanks. That made this purchase a no-brainer. The caveat? It's not a simple "replace the chipboard into the new shell and you're good to go".THE PROBLEM:The inner workings of the new shells DO NOT match the inner workings of the original fob. The chipboard fits perfectly fine in the new shell, all of the posts align as they should and the board is secure in the fob. The problem is with the switchblade. The old switchblade mechanism will not fit with the new shell.THE SOLUTION:If you have a few tools and some minor mechanical skills you can overcome this problem:1. Remove the keyblade on the original fob - poke out the small pin holding it in place (hammer and a picture-hanging-wall-nail) and slide the blade out. Do this for the new fob as well; remove the blank (Don't lose either of the miniscule holding pins!).2. Slide the old blade into the new mechanism (mind the alignment, there's a groove that needs to align with the locking pinhole) and lock it in place by gently hammering the locking pin into place.2a. At this point, I had to get a 1/16 drill bit and clean the pin hole out a little bit to make sure the pin could actually go back into the new mechanism with the original blade.NEARLY CELEBRATORY BEER TIME:If you've made it this far...then youtube can carry you home with the little idiosyncratic annoyances to finish the task.Unfortunately, now my wife thinks that she has $479 "free money" to spend at Target or some nonsense since I saved so much money replacing my wife's 2 fobs...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great replacement to original
Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021
The end result I considered a five-star, but I only gave it a four because it's not straightforward and does not come with instruction. I consider myself a very mechanically and kind person and have dealt with a lot of different gadgets like this in my life. For the average person, they are going to give this a one-star and walk away from it and return it. You have to have some type of skills to do this and also follow some of the YouTube videos that are out there. In the end if it works out like mine, it's almost like a factory key. In the picture that I posted the one on the left is my original 2010 key fob, and the one on the right is one of the fobs I replaced. It's very hard to tell them apart. It has the same look and feel. I definitely recommend this if your key fob started to deteriorate like mine. I will tell you this it did take me a while. Specifically to remove the key from the old key fob. There is a small pin that you need a very small object to get out and believe me it's not easy. Winding the spring so it opens like a switchblade is also a little bit challenging, but if you find the right video you'll see that it's not really that big of a deal once you figure out how to do it. All in all, for the money it's worth a shot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hit or miss, but probably not worth it
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2020
Piece of crap. I ordered one before and it worked great for about two years but then one of the peg/teeth things on the button broke and I had to superglue it back on. Knowing it will likely not last much longer I ordered a new shell again. This time, after swapping the chip to the new shell and installing a new battery, the buttons would only work 1/10 of the time. I had to use the actual key to unlock the door.
I couldn't even just swap parts out from the new shell to the new shell either (since all I really needed to replace was the metal key-release button) but even though they look very similar, none of the pieces are actually the same design or dimensions. They will only work with their own shell. Even the springs are different. Since none of the buttons would work on the new shell (unlock/lock/trunk release/panic) I had to go back to my old one. Lets just hope the glue holds up..

I'm back to where I was before this second purchase.
