I elected not to use the provided harness that came with these switches. (If you use the harness already in the vehicle you don't have to pull the steering wheel.) But that means I did have to remove the new switches from the connectors on the new harness.
The connectors on the switches have a lip on them. Do not try to just pull off the wires. They can't be rocked loose and if you hold on by the wires and pull you may pull them out of the connectors. The lip is on the back of the switch (as you are looking at it from the front). You must slide something thin into the connector on the back side, something that is about the width of the connector, to push the plastic lip out of the way so the connector will slide out. It can be very frustrating. I found that a .010" feeler gauge works, as did a Fender thin guitar pick.
The most difficult part of the operation is getting the old switches off the connectors. If you're replacing them, they must be bad right? Here's a trick if you're not trying to preserve the old ones: Pry off the old worn out plastic on the front of the old switch. Then pry out the circuit board in the old switch. When the board comes out, the connector will slide right off.
Make sure to line up the connectors properly. If they are installed incorrectly strange things may happen. I read of someone who had a constant horn until he got it straightened out.
And if you're as cautious as Iam, when you hook the battery back up, and when you start the vehicle the first time after playing with the airbag, it's not a bad idea to not be in line with it, in case it goes off. I did my first start from the passenger seat.
I pryed off the plastic covers on each side of the steering column to expose the bolts and removed them with the 8mm wrench. With the airbag in hand, I opted to not disconnect the plug, but carefully turned it and slid it on top of the steering column through the top section of steering wheel. Because my switches were the issue and not the wire harness (Thank God...the wiring looked daunting), I simply unplugged the wire...okay, not simply, it's really in there, but there is no lock to it, it's just a tight fit, so pull firmly on the connector and not the wire harness and it will come off. I didn't use them, but needle nosed pliers might help. The new switches have the wiring harnesses already installed, so you have to play tug o' war with them as well. Such is life...
It's plug and play as soon as you've managed the wiring. Reverse the steps and you're done. I had stuck my thumb through the rubber of the original switches in my truck and to see those beautiful new ones instead of the rotted, gaping hole ones was awesome.
Ford had wanted $[...]. to do the same job...$[...]. just for the part. I got my switches for $[...] and shipping was free because I am a Prime member. Same Motorcraft box, same everything except the price...
My Yellow 2003 Sport Trac and I are very grateful!

BTW...according to the 'is this your part' thing on the site, this was not the right part, but a call to Ford to get my part number confirmed that it was. Why the mix up? No idea. I would say that Amazon's find your part isn't quite up to par. Sorry, Amazon. But my advice is to double check with a Ford parts department and trust their number.
