Customers like the signal strength of the router. They say it provides ample signal to the cameras without issue, does a great job of extending your network signal on all bands, and picks up and amplifies the signal beautifully. The extender communicates the signal strengths of the two bands so you can place it as advertised. Customers also say the range extension is outstanding, easy to configure, and has surprising reach.

Customers are mixed about the performance of the router. Some mention that their computer is fast, has instant access, and has a high speed connection all across the house. However, others say that it really fell short, the low frequency band lost performance slowly over time, and frequently downgraded devices that went idle.
"...Overall, seems solid and easy to set up-- even if it left me with three different SSID's...." Read more
"...frustrated because although the Router kept me connected, it was very slow...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the ease of use of the networking router. Some mention that the user interface was very intuitive, and it makes life super easy. They also say that the product works great, has very good tech support, and the setup was easy. However, others say that they received horrible tech support and the interface was buggy.

Customers are dissatisfied with the connectivity of the networking router. They mention that it tends to lose connection in the middle of an online class or meeting, has a poor signal, and causes connection issues with wireless devices. Some customers also report that a firmware upgrade is causing it to drop connection. The router also has issues connecting to IPV6 websites and has service interruptions.
"...This setting also seemed to give my security cameras fits, causing frequent disconnects...." Read more
"...Camera works; POE injector works. Nighthawk consistently dies after about a week or so. Pull the power and reboot, 1 more week...." Read more
"...It transmits a strong signal as well as enhances the wired connection with a 10/100/1000 connection...." Read more
"...Problems which lower the rating are inconsistent wireless connections to various devices and the hoops Netgear makes you jump through to get support...." Read more
Customers are dissatisfied with the reboots of the networking router. They say that it needs to be rebooted within 48 hours. Some customers also mention that the device constantly reboots on its own and is not reliable.
"...While it is cycling in this bad state, reset will not work consistently, WPS buttons do not work, I can't connect to Netgear EX7000's mywifiext.net..." Read more
"...Even wire clients would rarely get over 500. It also needs to be restarted weekly. There are large parts of the house the signal can’t penetrate...." Read more
"...However, within 24 hours the 2GHz channel started dropping and needed a reboot to fix. This happened again and again over a few days...." Read more
"...Otherwise, there is a bug in the firmware. It constantly resets when you try to configure it on the admin panel...." Read more

But as the weeks went by I became frustrated because although the Router kept me connected, it was very slow. I had to settle for a 2.4 connection and even that was sometimes pretty slow on my tablet and on my phone. I finally gave in to my craving to get the extender to go with the very good router.
It has made an enormous difference and has surprising reach. At least half of my house now gets a stronger signal from the extender than from the router itself. Netgear's instructions say that an amber light means an ok signal. I kept wandering all around trying to get a blue light for both 2.4 and 5, which would be an "excellent" signal.
I would suggest not spending a lot of time trying to get blue lights - when I finally gave in to one amber and one blue, I discovered that the amber signal was more than "ok" - it was 2+ times faster. And then tonight, I suddenly found that both 2.4 and 5 were blue. Not sure I will always get such a good signal, even on the 5 band, but it's held all night. I would suggest getting the best amber you can (if you can't get blue), and let it settle in. Also, check your speed, you might be very happy with amber.
If I could, I would have docked half a star for the poor placement of the power cord into the extender. It actually prevents me from placing the lowest antenna where I'd like. But overall performance was too good to dock a whole star for something this minor by comparison.
I also found it a pleasure to set up with another Netgear product. The extender and router found each other within a minute and contact was stabilized in another 20 or so seconds.
There were two frustrating aspects to the mesh setup:
1) Extender setup: My laptop kept seeking internet connected networks such as the ethernet connection through my eGPU or my internet provider's local wifi umbrella that is stored in my wifi setup with auto-connect enabled. This would kick me off the extender's network and prevent me from logging into setup. So, be sure you disable all other adapters/connections to force the connection to the default extender network. This is not a problem with the extender itself, just a tip to avoid frustration.
2) Building the mesh: The factory firmware that the EX7000 ships with enables it to act as an access point or extender with unique SSID, but the option to form a mesh (ie, same SSID for router and extender) with the router is not present. You need to update the firmware to have this option. I recommend doing this as soon as you are logged into the extender before configuring it.
One other annoyance unrelated to setup was due to my decision to enable "Smart Connect" on the companion router. This feature setup my network with one SSID and allowed the router to assign devices to the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands as it saw fit. I found that it frequently downgraded devices that went idle (such as phones or tablets) from 5 to 2.4GHz causing a major drop in performance (~500+ mbps to ~50 mbps in a far room). I'd have to manually disconnect then reconnect the device to get back to the high speed network, and the router would downgrade the device again if it went idle. This was annoying to say the least. This setting also seemed to give my security cameras fits, causing frequent disconnects. I disabled it to enable manual user choice of 5 or 2.4GHz networks with separate SSIDs (still in mesh mode). Everything has performed for the most part as desired and expected since doing this.
I give up on this piece of crap and that is me being nice about it. The fact that Netgear doesn't supply a free replacement for the time I have invested on trying to get a working unit shows that they do not give a crap about us. The only thing that works on this is how well it looks. It looks BA but it will not work for any real amount of time. In the end I tried custom firmwares and started using it as a test connection to some ip cameras with an injector. Camera works; POE injector works. Nighthawk consistently dies after about a week or so. Pull the power and reboot, 1 more week. I did break down and buy the Orbi mesh system and I have had great success with it but I will never buy another Netgear device that is not proven first like I waited on the Orbi. Waste of money and time.

This was nothing hard to install like I hear some people saying but i do have a tough time KEEPING it working. Just drops, drops everything attached to it for no reason. I need to do something with the devices attached to see exactly how long it is, but normally somewhere in between 2 and 3 weeks. I then have to go down to the location where it is, unplug it, wait for the caps to die, then plug it back in. All good now, but this crap is getting old.
I cannot use the web interface and force a reboot, it doesn't work. Must be fully cold cycled or it will not come up working. I have the latest firmware, I am using as an AP only, no dhcp and it is being fed by cat6 from the main router. No idea why and I have been fighting this thinking they will fix it since I got it.
I always know when it is out by checking my thermostats and that one is down. I like netgear but mine is inconsistent enough to lose two stars.
