Solid rack for this new commuter

Solid rack for this new commuter
I got my Specialized hybrid (Crosstrail Elite) to become a commuter bike for me and my daily cargo (briefcase and a large lunch tote). Originally it looked like the Wald 535 Rear Twin Bicycle Carrier Basket (18 x 7.5 x 12) would be my only option given the large size I needed. However, after seeing a review of the Sunlite Bicycle Bungie Cargo Net, Black holding a large picnic basket on a rear rack, I decided to go this route. The Topeak Explorer is a solidly built rack, can hold over 50 lbs., and includes a convenient tailight mount. I haven't yet purchased an accessory to use with the MTX mount, but I can tell it's a stable mounting system. Note that the only difference between the disc brake mount and the regular mount is the rectangular spacers attached to the bottom mount. Even though I didn't need the disc brake mount, I like the extra space it provides between the support bars and the rear wheel, which will be an added benefit especially once I get a pair of rear panniers. I also have my rack mounted in conjunction with a rear fender (Planet Bike Hardcore Hybrid Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set with Stainless Steel Hardware & Mud Flaps (45mm Wide)), which simply required getting a pair of slightly longer bolts at the hardware store. Thus far there have been no problems. I wouldn't rely on the rack to double as a fender: if you're going to ride in wet conditions, get a proper rear fender.I've read people's complaints about buying Topeak MTX rear bags and not realizing they can't be used without the Topeak rack, but the reverse is not true: you can use whatever rear bag you like atop the Topeak rack (unless it has its own proprietary mounting system too).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent rack, easy to install. Too small
Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2014
This rack is very well made, but unfortunately the mounting arms are too short to fit on my Trek Verve+ that also has fenders. The rack is so nice that I decided to construct a mounting bracket to allow me to use it. The distance from the center of the lower mounting hole to the bottom of the bracket arms is about 14 1/4". This is the minimum clearance available when installed. You will need a little more distance than this to ensure adequate clearance. See attached photo for one possible solution that gave me the added clearance I needed above the rear fender. I had two screws to secure this piece of metal, one for the fender mount and one that would have been used for this rack, had it been long enough. This ensured a solid installation. I needed an additional set of screws to attach the mounting arms to this metal bracket. The support arms that secure the front of this rack to the frame were used at the maximum extension, just barely long enough to get the job done. My wheels are about 28" in diameter on this bike.
