Major Thermal & Performance Issues- Zheino 256 GB mSATA SSD
Recently I decided to upgrade the mSATA drives in my three, circa 2011-2013, Samsung Series 9 Ultrabooks. I saw this Zheino 256GB mSATA while researching replacement mSATA drives. For under $40, I decided to give this device a try in my 2011, 11.6", Core i3, Samsung Series 9 NP900X1A-A01US Ultrabook & compare performance to the more costly name-brand units installed in my other Series 9 computers. The experience has NOT been good. The Zheino drive specifications appear on par with similar, name-brand, mSATA SSD units at a 45% price savings. The Zheino specs look nice with a somewhat unusual design. When installed the component side of the drive is oriented face down. There are two LEDs on the back side of the PCB. A bright red one near the edge indicates POWER, and a dimmer drive activity light which appears to stay illuminated when the drive is inactive and flashes when drive access occurs. Having the component side down & the LED side up makes sense for keeping tabs on drive status, but this may have something to do with the drive's Achilles Heel.In preparation for swapping drives I mounted the drive in a Zheino USB 3.0-to-mSATA enclosure, then ran Acronis True Image to partition & clone the factory 64GB drive. Things started out fine, but I quickly realized something wasn't quite right. The clone operation slowed to a crawl, ultimately requiring over an hour to clone ~40GB of data from the original SSD. I thought this was odd but, with the cloning process finally completed, I went about installing the Zheino drive into the computer. The installation & subsequent Windows startup were uneventful. Windows properly identified the new SSD, automatically installed whatever drivers were necessary, & it was done. I ran a CrystalDiskMark test &, though not spectacular, the results were acceptable for this particular computer with its 300 GB/s SATA bus limitation.Or so I thought the performance was acceptable, until I began copying files to the new drive. Transfers would begin normally, but the transfer rate would quickly plummet until eventually it was transferring data at 16 MB/s or less. The Zhenio mSATA SSD was actually SLOWER at writing files than writing to a Micro-SD card! At this point I ordered a drive from another manufacturer for the computer & decided to use the Zheino SSD as fast portable storage. The alternate drive arrived, cloning the original SSD in about 10 minutes, & it runs perfectly perfectly.Unfortunately the Zheino SSD turned out to be rather useless as an external storage device as well. Just as when it was installed in the computer, writing files would quickly bog down to sub-SD card write speeds. I ran CrystalDiskInfo & discovered the problem: HEAT. When connected to the Zheino mSATA enclosure board, on a cold power up the drive temperature shows as 46°C (115°F). After only a few seconds of writing data the drive temperature climbs to 60°+C (142°F) & begins throttling itself due to heat. Is it really that hot, or is it just a bad unit with a bad temperature sensor? Of this I am uncertain. It doesn't feel particularly hot and it is hard to believe it powers on at 115°F.At this point I thought I must have received a defective unit & requested a replacement. Unfortunately the replacement unit behaves exactly as did the original. Transfers start out fast, the drive overheats, then it throttles itself to a crawl. The second drive managed to maintain ~35 MB/s on a write operation vs. the first unit's 16 MB/s. Slightly better, but still overheated/throttled, & paling in comparison to the 250-350 MB/s transfer speeds obtained with other drives in the same enclosure. The original Zheino unit experienced overheating/throttling issues both when installed directly in the computer & also when installed in Zheino's external USB 3.0-to-mSATA drive enclosure. Nonetheless, as one last test to eliminate this specific enclosure as the problem, I swapped the drive to another enclosure with no change. Other brand SSDs run perfectly when mounted in the same enclosure.Based on my experience with two separate units, the Zheino 256GB mSATA SSD is an extremely poor choice for an mSATA SSD. Both units suffered from overheating and throttling issues. Both are literally slower than writing to a fast SD card. The Zheino SSD is bargain-priced but, with its overheating/throttling issue & slow 15-35 MB/s transfer speeds, this is a case where you get what you pay for.--DB

4.0 out of 5 stars Good performance and good value, M3 reads slightly faster than Q3, but not the fastest
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019
What's the difference between the mSATA M3 and Q3 versions? Basically, the SSD controller is the same (SM2258XT), but the flash memory chips are apparently Intel in the Zheino Q3, and Sandisk in te Zheino M3. Of these two, the M3 appears to be a little faster reading, but the Q3 is a little faster at writing. However, both M3 and Q3 use a DRAM-less design, which means that under sustained write load (such as when restoring this SSD from a backup), the write rate is initially fast, but after some time, it will eventually drop to around 28MB/s for the M3 model, and around 38MB/s for the Q3 model - see attached images. This is slower than MLC mSATA SSDs, which will sustain write speeds of 110MB/s from start to end. However, such long writes are uncommon in normal usage, so therefore it should not matter quite as much. This slow down of the write throughput should also be less pronounced if there are pauses in between the writes, and if there is some unallocated space for over-provisioning. For comparison, I am providing benchmark tests for M3, Q3, and LiteON L9M models, all 128GB in AHCI mode. So in conclusion, the M3 is a decent performer, it disappoints a bit in terms of sustained write rates, but it's still a good value, I think.
