I was a design engineer for many years and I appreciate a product that's well designed and made. Unfortunately, the Mr Longarm fails in several respects. First, the plastic wingnuts are a complete joke; the wings on half of them broke the first day I used the tool. I replaced them with steel and that fixed one problem. Second, fasteners that the Mr Longarm designers provided to secure the brush clamp are round head screws with a screwdriver slot. When you try to tighten them, you quickly find that you need a screwdriver to hold the screw while you are applying torque to the wingnuts. The reason to have a wingnut is so that you don't need tools to tighten it. The designers could easily have replaced the round head screw with a hex head bolt and molded hex sockets into the holder clamp so that the bolt head would be immobilized when you tighten the wingnut.
I had some difficulty getting a brush to stay in one place in the clamping mechanism, so at first I used a Wooster Brush Q3211-2 Shortcut Angle Sash Paintbrush, 2-Inch This works well because the handle is short and has a slip-resistant rubber coating, making it ideal for the Mr Longarm.
Did I mention that the Mr Longarm instructions are lacking in detail? I noticed that there seemed to be an extra bolt and wingnut, and after a few days of use, it finally dawned on my what it was for. In the photo, you can see this bolt in between the clamping screws and the bolt that sets the angle of the arm. This bolt is put through the hole near the end of a brush handle. When you do this, in combination with the clamp, the brush is held very securely. I was able to use a Wooster Brush 5221-2-1/2 Silver Tip Angle Sash Paintbrush, 2-1/2-Inch with no problems.
Other than those issues, the Mr Longarm did its job well. It's light weight and the angle adjustment has teeth that prevent it from slipping. Mounting and unmounting a brush is not quick. To get the best use out of the Mr Longarm, I highly recommend a Wooster Brush Sherlock GT extension pole. The snap attachment of this pole will allow you to remove the brush and Mr Longarm quickly and easily so that you can dip and clear the brush without the extension pole attached. This is something that isn't practical if you use an extension with a screw-on attachment. Note that the Wooster GT comes with a screw-on adapter that works well with the Mr. Longarm.
If you are using the Mr Longarm to cut in a line at the ceiling, your success will depend more on a steady hand and good eyesight than on the tool. I found that I could cut a line no more than 4' - 6' above my head. Beyond that, even my 20-15 vision couldn't see the line well enough to do the job as well as I wanted.
Pros: Holds the brush very securely. Light weight. Angle adjustment very secure.
Cons: Plastic wingnuts are useless; replace them with metal. Clamp screws require a screwdriver to tighten. Instructions poorly written.
