Purchased to replace a Stanley branded garage door handle. Looking at the old handle i figured undo 2 screws and the old one would fall out, put this one in and be done. Not exactly. Getting the old one out required a screwdriver and a hack saw. I was not counting on the hack saw. I will not describe this process because your situation may be different than mine.
This handle is a virtual clone of the Stanley size wise, the old screws even fit the new handle, which is handy since the screws that came with the handle are shorter than the old. Attaching the handle will be obvious. 2 screws. That said, get help from a spouse or kid to hold the handle in place while you screw it down. (I could only be on 1 side of the door at a time). Once screwed on the handle has a a square shaft that sticks through the door and it is the same size as the Stanley so the original mechanism on the inside would work. There is a locking washer that I had to use to use to secure the mechanism on the inside of the door to the shaft. The instructions do not cover this. Not at all. They don’t even mention the washer. Its maybe 3/4 of an inch across with a star shaped hole in the middle. Nothing in the instructions and it is a bit tricky.
Tech support said I would not be able to push this washer on with my fingers. Roger that. They suggested a deep socket that would apply force to the edge of washer. and rapping the socket with small hammer to drive the washer onto the shaft. Make sure you think this through because doing this step because in my case I needed to have part of the internal mechanism on the shaft BEFORE driving on the locking washer. Before. Because you can’t get the LOCKING washer off. Also, don’t drive the washer too far onto the shaft or the internal mechanism might not clear the mounting screws. I know these hints may not apply to you. Your take away is to think through the job before starting. I didn’t understand some aspects of the job and am lucky that I had the tools I needed in the garage.
In the end I needed a 1/2 inch wrench, a screw driver, a hack saw, deep socket and hammer.
I am not a mechanic and I got it done. You can too provided you have a couple tools, good light, decent eyesight, a person to help hold this handle as you screw it on and a little common sense.
Once in place it works fine. The handle itself is solid and feels well made. For me this was not as simple and screw out the old one and put in the new one. You might get off that easy. I hope so. I needed a few other tools that you may not anticipate. Gather them before you start, and your life will be easier.
I bought 3 of these garage door locks for 3 different locations, all had to be replaced for different reasons. They were very easy to install.
I found that the square shank was a lot longer then any of the others but that was not a problem. You could easily cut them shorter if you wanted? On a couple I had to either in- large the holes a little or re-Aline the holes, easy! On all of them the little bolts were about 1/4” to short and even the ones I removed from the old locks were too short. So take the old screw to Ace, buy the correct screws and ask them nice and they will probably make you more keys. You see they have these new key making machines and when it says- this key don’t exist* that is BS. The technician needs to cut it the old way.
Now you got it made. Now if you really want to cover you butt. Take the little spring clip that comes with each lock with you to The Ace and buy 2-3 extra ones. You may never need them. They look a little different, they are round, but if for some reason you need to make some adjustments, because, ‘NOW YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL’ something on that door you are going to wreck the old spring metal clip and look at you, you have 3 more wired to the door and they are .30 cents each. Hell for that price you could get your neighbors together and work on you garage door.

I used this handle to replace an old Stanley that had been on a non-insulated steel overhead door from the 1980s. I intentionally selected this model because the mounting screws mount with the heads on the inside (better security). I had to do some customizing, but I anticipated that would be the case.
