The cylinder is not keyed. It comes with packets of wafers (tumblers), and you can key it to your key. You need to have some idea of how this is done. Having tweezers and steady hands helps.
Make sure your package is not missing anything before you start. You should have the cylinder, four packets ot wafers, a packet of springs, a locking bar, and a cap. There is also a packet of grease, but it isn't as critical as all the other things.
You need to know your cylinder code to match it. Sometimes, it will be on the cylinder, or written in your car paperwork, but often it is not. You can get it by taking apart your old cylinder, if you are careful and don't spill the wafers. If your cylinder is badly damaged, you may not be able to do that.
My ignition lock was not broken, just worn out from 20 years of use. I was able to use my old cylinder and match the wafers. It fixed my sticky key issue, and now the ignition works reliably. In so far ar replicating original functionality, this is a good product.
I slid the key into this lock, and then inserted one tumbler of each type into the first tumbler slot. There are 4 tumbler types. I pushed down on the tumbler with the key in (simulating the spring keeping it down), and checked if the little rectangular piece retracted (this piece needs to retract flush so that the cylinder can be turned) If it could retract flush with the housing, it's the correct tumbler. If the piece is sticking out and can't be pushed in while the tumbler is being pushed in, then it's the wrong tumbler. I did this with each slot until I finished all 9. I installed it into my truck ignition and it worked perfectly.
The directions might have been clearer. You want not only the key code but the *tumbler code* from GM to more readily install this without picking apart the old cylinder or scrutinizing the key notches.
Hardest part was peening the corners of the plate covering the tumblers.
You will be very happy if you have tweezers to handle the small parts. And use all the grease.
