Exactly What I Was Looking For
My laundry room doubles as the garage entry to the house. I wanted the light in there to be on a motion sensor so I wouldn't have to keep fumbling for the switch whenever my hands were full with the laundry or groceries. I first tried a different motion sensor socket, the kind with a 180 degree sensor jutting out from the bottom, which turned out to be a complete fail. My light socket is 10ft up on the wall (bulb points parallel to the ground), and I could never position the sensor in a way that would readily pick up movement beneath it. It also secretly had a dawn/dusk sensor (with no mention of it anywhere on the packaging), which was sensitive enough to pick up the tiny amount of sunlight spilling in from a small, covered window. In other words, it didn't work. The First Alert Motion Sensor socket solved all of my problems. The 360 sensor can pick up movement the second anyone steps into the room. Best of all, no light sensor -- the bulb turns on day or night! One thing to look out for, though: the sensor does have sweet spots, marked on the back of the socket area with arrows. If I may share a tip, I extended those marks with a red marker (as can be seen in the picture) so that I can easily position the socket without having to unscrew it completely to check the arrows on the back again whenever I have to switch out the light bulb or something.

We have a light fixture in our garage that has no wall switch. We have been using a pull chain to turn the light on but that's not really a good solution for two reasons--1) the garage is too dark to walk into to turn the light on and 2) my husband leaves the light on all night long. This motion sensor is the perfect answer. My decision to purchase this motion sensor was based on the fact that it will work with a 100 watt light bulb and the sensor will stay on as long as it is sensing motion. Most other sensors out there only stay on for a set amount of time after detecting motion...usually no more than 10 minutes. But this sensor keeps the light on as long as I am working in the garage. I did check to see that the light did in fact go out after I had left the garage. I went back between 5-10 minutes after leaving the garage and found that the light was indeed off. PROBLEM SOLVED!

I have been an active member of Amazon for quite some time and myself rely heavily on reviews provided by others when making a decision as to whether or not to purchase an item--whether that purchase be one that I am making through Amazon or another source (such as a local store); therefore, I am very aware of the value of user feedback and do my best to assist others in making a quality decision by providing quality feedback.

I purchased this sensor socket just over 3 years ago, along with the AmerTac MLC2BC, a similar sensor that was less expensive. The First Alert went into my unheated garage overhead light, and the AmerTac was used in the basement by the washing machine. Both operated rather effectively until recently when the First Alert flickered for a few days then stopped working altogether - 1.5 months after the expiration of the 3-year warranty (rest assured that warranty periods are carefully analyzed and calibrated). I initially thought it was the bulb, and would advise others to test the bulb prior to throwing it out - it may in fact be the sensor that went first, not the other way around. Following this incident, I read the recent reviews for the First Alert, and notice a number of folks experiencing a similar, unexpected demise of this unit. Some have questioned the effect of being in a cold garage. This was a relatively mild winter compared to the past few, so I would disagree with this premise in my case. The First Alert has a 4-star rating; the AmerTac has 3. The less expensive AmerTac in my basement continues to operate reliably. The primary point I'd like to make about these sensors is I've come to the conclusion that the technology is not quite there yet, and performance is inconsistent, probably influenced by multiple factors such as ambient light, humidity, cold, dust, and a hundred things I haven't even considered. I've read many of the reviews for both items, and there are a multitude of unwarranted failures for each. Some people have great experiences with them, others have a dead unit straight out of the box. Some folks just don't understand how they operate (I did laugh at one such individual's question asking how loud a noise had to be to turn the light on). The cheaper AmerTac unit that for many people just doesn't work at all is the one in my basement that continues to snap on the moment I need it. So it's a crap shoot. Maybe this item is still in early adopter stage, and as early adopters, we need to assume some risk, and that risk is that it won't work or it won't work forever. In some cases there are probably better solutions. I love the battery operated sensor lights, and use those liberally in closets, the shed, and inside dark cabinets. They are spot-on predictable, and I've had some outside - attached to trees - for several years with no problems. They may not be as effective in the garage, as it's a large area and we'd like better lighting there, but there are other solutions, but they all have their limitations. I am actually back here and writing this review because, despite it's annoying and untimely death, I've decided to purchase this First Alert again.

That said, here is my experience with both sensors. The First Alert has been used in the garage overhead, so I was concerned about its level of sensitivity. It worked perfectly from the vantage point of the kitchen door that opens into the garage, as the light would come on as soon as the door opened. However, the kitchen door is three stair steps higher than the garage floor, and I've noticed less sensitivity from floor level, especially when one is coming around the side of the car. I do like that it turns off relatively quickly after motion has stopped, but it is disappointing that there is not a daylight sensor that keeps it from turning on during the day. Despite it repeatedly turning on and off a lot - supposedly the worst thing for an electrical bulb, according to my electrical engineer friend - the lightbulb was not changed out in 3 years of operation and is still working. The First Alert supposedly has a 360 degree radius, but I have not witnessed that, believing instead that it has dead zones. And sometimes the exact same movement in the exact same spot will not turn the unit on again. It's a little odd. The AmerTac, on the other hand, only has a 120 degree sensor radius, which many folks complained about, but is actually perfect if you just want a light when you enter a room - such as descending the stairs into the basement. Mine is over the washing machine and picks up movement about 10 - 15 feet away as I walk towards it. It does seem to remain on for longer than 15 minutes, and I admit to peeking into the basement occasionally to ensure it's turned off. Unlike it's First Alert counterpart, it's still working three years later, not that it should win any awards over that.

Bottom line: it really pays to figure out exactly what you need based on the activity in the given area. If you are in and out of a room quickly and repeatedly, you don't want a light that remains on for 15 minutes. If you spend a lot of time in the area, you don't want to constantly be waving at the light (in which case you're best off with a sensor for entering the room, and a standard fixture for working in it). And if you just need enough light not to kill yourself as you pass through one place to another, a battery-operated light is simple, effective, and movable. None of them are 100% effective. But they all make life much easier, which is why we repurchase them even though they don't meet our high standards. Sometimes simple is best.

Installed this in the garage, and now I don't have to worry about mis-stepping on the stairs.

I do notice there is a small lag before it activates (less than a second), but this is similar to other motion activated devices that I have. The 360 degree is working as stated, as it activates both when I open the garage door or the door leading to the house, which are on opposite side of the sensor.

Using one in the basement and one in the garage.

My garage door opener lights would not turn off so I removed those bulbs altogether and screwed this into the light holder socket. Added a led bulb and I am all set. Light turns on when the garage door opens and after about 4 minutes turns off.

Love it as I don't have to bother with the switches anymore.
