These lights are plenty durable for average use, if you are going to be using these lights every day, I would suggest looking at some of the professional options such as kinoflo etc. instead. Lowell does make a modification kit for my Rifa lights that will allow them to take both CFL and Tungsten bulbs, but the Lowell modification kit does not come with bulbs or the necessary add-on to even mount the CLF's to the modified light AND costs more than two of these full kits combined.
A few additional positive notes:
The support ribs used inside the softbox are metal.
The softbox shroud can be mounted tall or wide depending on your preference, just by turning it 90 degrees when installing it on the base.
The bulbs put out a nice daylight balanced color and look to be pretty accurate regarding color rendering (no cast to my eye).
Interior secondary clip on diffuser (included) helps spread the light and make nice and soft once the main diffuser is added.
What could be better (minor grips):
I would like it if the softbox was more square, thus it would be a little larger.
The stands could have less plastic.
Would be nice if the cord was a little longer.
I will be using these lights this weekend for some interview setups and will report back on any issue I experience. So far, I see no reason not to give them a 5 star rating.
I am truly happy with the purchase, and I can rarely say that about my cheap purchases. Thanks to the manufacturer for providing such a decent product at a reasonable price point.
Yes, I would recommend this CFL softbox lighting kit to a friend. Great value!
The assembled softbox is sturdy (lots of velcro), and has a hefty carry loop on the back. I carried it around by that loop (detached from the light-stand) without anything feeling like it was going to fall apart.
Nice light intensity for photo work, that can be customized with 3 switches (2 - 2 - 1 for the five light sockets). An extra diffuser panel is provided to mute the brightness. The light stand is similar to the ones in my StudioPro umbrella kit, good and sturdy. The five included 5500K "Daylight" bulbs provided a nice, even light for my photoshoot, no flickers. Remember CFL bulbs take a minute or so to fully warm up.
225W of CFL do produce a bit of heat (but imagine when these things used incandescent bulbs!). When you need diffused, consistent, continuous light, this is the way to do it. And it's a lot cheaper to add one of these to your kit than adding a modern Speedlite, anyway!
This softbox will be part of my standard kit for future indoor shoots. Great for continuous lighting. Recommended.
As to the stand that came with the softbox, it's made of steel but is a very lightweight version of a normal light stand, with rather flimsey adjustment clamps. I use it to support a small reflector, and it's very handy for that.
As to the softbox, I put it on a full size stand and it works great !
Pros: The soft box puts out a good amount of light. I like the ability to switch each of the five bulbs on/off individually to vary the light output. The light stand was surprisingly well made. The light stand had plastic locks, but was much better quality than I've seen in similarly inexpensive light stands. Decent length to the power cord.
Cons: The light head is well designed but cheaply assembled. Build quality would have been much improved with a couple of drops of super glue to secure where the power cord plugs in. Also, I pulled the fuse to take a look at it. When I did so I accidentally rotated the entire fuse assembly. After replacing the fuse the unit would not power up. I opened up the light and found that the ground wire to the fuse holder isn't secured. In fact the ground wire is simply bent to make contact with the fuse holder and could easily lose contact. If you get one and it's DOA this is probably the problem. A drop of solder will prevent this issue. Otherwise I'm happy with the unit and can live with performing a few minor build quality "upgrades" for the price paid.
As previous posters have stated, there are no instructions for assembling the soft box. Find the You Tube video.
I'll probably order a second unit.

My frustration was the 2 out of 5 BULB came BURNT. It really disappointed me and would love to receive two new from FOVITEC.
