Why 4 stars: The supplied instruction (printed on the back of the packaging) was nothing more than some printed verbiage with no visual reference to go by. I checked out the internet and found nothing there to assist with this adapter installation.
Sooooo, here goes with a written description on MY installation process:
1. screw the gray part (with the set screw) (use a 7/8" open end wrench if you have one) into the long black adapter tube until it is snugged against the black o-ring
2. screw the black adapter tube (use a 1 1/4" socket if you have one) into the the tub spout until it is snugged up
3. look to see if the gray part extended out past the back of the tub spout . . . if it does, cut off the front section of male threads on the black adapter tube (there are two groups of threads with a plain area between the two) . . . take care to not let the saw blade 'jump' into the threaded area
4. screw the black adapter tube back into the tube spout . . . it is easy to cross thread the adapter threads so take care . . . if you have a cast iron fitting with female threads you could thread the adapter into it and make sure the adapter threads enter smoothly
5. after the adapter is screwed into the tub spout check to see if the gray part is flush (or recessed) with the back of the tub spout
6. remove the adapter, remove the gray part, wrap the male adapter threads with Teflon tape (wrap it in the clockwise direction) (3-4 wraps), and screw the adapter into the tub spout until it is firmly seated
7. screw the gray part into the adapter until it is snugged up against the o-ring, look were the set screw is located . . . my tub spout had a slot in the bottom at the back, and I determined that the gray part could be turned another 1/2 turn so that the set screw would point straight down such that an Allen wrench could go through the slot to tighten the set screw
8. remove the gray part, wrap Teflon tape round the male threads and screw the part back into the adapter and tighten it up until the set screw points down towards the tub spout slot . . . I wrapped the Teflon tape around the threads to seal this area as there was some concern about the o-ring distorting due to over tightening and not making a good seal
9. cut off the copper pipe such that it extends about 2" from the finished surround surface (use a small tube cutter is preferred), use some fine sandpaper or a Scotch pad to clean up the tube surface (a small file may be needed to remove any burrs from the end of the cut tube) (make sure no solder bumps on the tube extend past the wall surface) . . . the gray part has an o-ring inside it which prevents water leakage from occurring past the surface of the copper tube
10. use a tooth pick to apply some o-ring lubricant (it SHOULD be silicone, other types of faucet lubricants can deteriorate the o-ring) (Danco makes two types of lubricant, MAKE SURE to get the silicone one) inside the gray part around the o-ring, place a light bead of lubricant along the copper pipe and wipe it around the surface all the way back to the finished wall
11. make sure the set screw doesn't extend into the area inside the gray part, you don't want the set screw tip scoring the copper pipe during installation as this could affect the o-rings ability to provide a seal
12. carefully slide the tub spout over the copper tube and gently slide it all the way back to the finished wall surface; if it doesn't slide with gentle pressure remove the spout and inspect the gray part and the copper part for obstructions, if the copper tube has been bent or deformed this adapter may not seat properly
13. after the tub spout is firmly seated against the wall surface use the Allen wrench to tighten the set screw firmly against the copper tube . . . firmly does NOT mean using cheater tubes to tighten the set screw such that it deforms the copper tube and/or pierces a hole in it
14. turn the water on and observe for any water dripping out the the slot in the bottom of the tub spout . . . if you have a shower feature on the tub spout activate that feature and again check for water dripping out of the spout
15. if there water dripping out loosen the set screw, gently pull the tub spout straight out, continue keeping the spout level, use a flashlight to look inside the spout, if the water is coming from the front threaded area there should be evidence of water along the inside bottom of the spout, if water is coming from the gray threaded part there should be some evidence of water on the gray part or the black hex it is screwed into
16. re-apply Teflon tape, re-assemble, re-test
17. after everything is fully assembled and water tight apply a bead of silicone sealer around the tub spout where it contacts the finished was surface (leave an opening at the bottom so any future water leaks can drain out and alert you to a problem
I was eventually able to get it installed without leaks. I had to adjust the location of part "A" multiple times so that the rubber washer would seat properly on the final turn of the sprout which brought it tight to the wall. This required more time and frustration than I was expecting. I think the original item pictured would be easier to install the first time.
