From the manufacturer
The Keys To Precise Ignition and Fuel Injection Timing
Together, the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors send the vital signals that keep your car's camshaft and crankshaft in sync. Camshaft sensors inform the ECU of the position of the engine's camshaft, while crankshaft sensors signal the position and rotational speed (RPMs) of the engine's crankshaft. As perhaps the most important of your vehicle's engine management sensors, they should only be replaced with premium parts.
Every Hitachi Astemo Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensor Carries On Our Tradition Of Excellence:
- Both our camshaft and crankshaft sensor testing regimens exceed typical operating conditions - we test our products in extreme conditions to verify their accuracy, quality, and reliability
- Our camshaft / crankshaft position sensors are designed to meet the OE output signals and error tolerances to ensure an accurate RPM signal and proper adjustments of the timing system
- Mechanical fitting accuracy guaranteed
The Hitachi Astemo Logo Is A Mark Of Quality
No product wears the Hitachi logo until it has been carefully designed, precisely manufactured, and rigorously tested. When it's time to replace your camshaft or crankshaft sensor, Hitachi Astemo quality is what your vehicle needs:
- Our sensors quickly relay precise information to the ECU, ignition control module (ICM), and/or the power control module (PCM)
- Advanced manufacturing methods create precision sensors
- Hitachi sensors provide accuracy and longevity
- Hitachi Astemo premium camshaft and crankshaft sensors are designed to meet the exact needs of your vehicle

And now for the tale....
I am overseas and decided to place an order for a replacement (i.e. non-Hitachi, non-Bosch) part on another website as they could deliver faster. It arrived, I broke out the socket set, installed it, cleared the codes from the ECU and the engine seemed to work fine. After a few minutes of idling I decided to test the car by driving around the block a few times. The first and second go-arounds went without incident. As I was making my third the engine stalled while making a corner, I lost all hydraulics (yup, out went the steering and brakes) and the instrument cluster lit up like a Christmas tree.
After a few what-in-the-world-just-happened seconds I realized what's gone wrong and restarted the engine by pulling the connector from the sensor. It took more turns than normal from the starter before the engine fired back up but once it did I was able to drive back to the garage without the 'Mo going into limp mode.
Losing control of the car was disconcerting and fortunately no one was hurt. It is frightening to imagine how bad things could have gotten however had the engine stalled at speed on, say, the highway. It could have easily turned deadly.
As it turned out the replacement sensor shorted itself which might have caused the ECU to restart.
My advice - buy direct from the dealership or OE from reputable sources. Not only will you be saving yourself a lot of grief, you might be saving lives in the process, including yours.
I’d have to recommend them based on my experience with these specific sensors, I can change both of mine out in 15 minutes on the side of the road so I carry a spare set in my trunk (G35)

This is the original OEM unit. Spend the extra and don't go with cheap no name sensors.
