Well made, heats water VERY quickly, requires 240 Volts and DIY skills for North America.
This water kettle works very well, but you need DIY skills to use it in North America. I became accustomed to 240 volt appliances when I lived in Europe. When it comes to heating, like kettles, irons or laminators, 240 volt devices heat much faster than the parallel North American appliances, which are almost always available only for 120 volts. The kettle's seller includes a warning note in large print that the kettle will only work at 220 volts and 50 Hz. (See photo.) While I am sure this is well-intentioned, it is obviously false, since the product itself is labeled on the bottom, ¨220-240 V 50/60 Hz.¨ I have been using this kettle for some time at 240 volts and 60 Hz in Minnesota, with zero problems. What the seller's warning is probably meant to convey is that this kettle requires 220-240 volts. Thus, the typical North American household receptacle won't work with this kettle. North American household receptacles are the wrong shape, they only supply120 volts. However, if you have the DIY skills and a 240 volt source, these kettles are quite useful. They heat water faster than an electric burner and -- amazingly -- even a gas burner. It's also significantly faster than our good-quality microwave oven.As an aside, the kettle's Hz specification (cycles per second of the alternating current) is irrelevant. The water kettle has no motors and no electronics, just a heating element. The heating element is simply a resistance wire that cannot sense or differentiate how rapidly the alternating current cycles. However, the product is labeled for 60 Hz, the North American standard, if you are concerned about it.The kettle's supplied plug is a typical Euro-style "Schucko" plug. (See image). To use this kettle in North America, you can cut that off the kettle's Schuko plug and replace it with a North American 240 volt plug for a North American a 240 volt receptacle if you happen to have one. Alternatively, as I did, you can plug the kettle into a short Schuko extension cord, (available from many Amazon vendors) and wire that directly to a 240 volt source. Many North American kitchens have 240 volt sources. Electric stoves, ovens, and cook tops typically require 240 volts. When we remodel our kitchen next year, I'll add a North American 240 volt receptacle and replace the kettle's plug. Finally, although I am happy to recommend this product and explain why I have one, I would not bother buying this product merely because you are planning to go to Europe to live or work. Water kettles like this are available everywhere in Europe, and are inexpensive (I never met a European who did not have one). It will be less hassle to buy one there, where you will have a much greater range of styles and colors to choose from.
